The Home Edit – Behind the Obsession

In September 2020, Netflix graced our screens with a new reality TV show called The Home Edit. Produced by Reece Witherspoon, the show follows two women, Clea and Joanna, who run an organising make-over business in America as they help individuals clean up and reorganise their houses. Not only does it feature celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Khloe Kardashian and Neil Patrick-Harris, it mainly features your everyday, American families. Rating in Netflix’s 10 Ten worldwide, we’ve broken down what makes this show so special and their best tips to help you with your spring cleaning.

One of the reasons it’s become so popular, apart from the aesthetically-pleasing rainbow colour-coordinated bookshelves and containers, is because it is so identifiable. Not only are their tips simple and easy to maintain, but they pick relatable clients with relatable messiness (most of the time) so that you are encouraged to change up your lifestyle. Their four-step (edit, categorise, contain and maintain) process looks to accommodate to the needs and wants of their client’s lifestyles, not to change them.

Throughout their show, they also provide endless and easy tips to help you reorganise in simple ways. Some of our favourite tips include:

  • Use see-through tubs so you don’t forget about foods that you have or pieces of clothing.
  • Always use matching hangers – it makes such a difference.
  • Don’t fill boxes to the maximum capacity.
  • Always use labels.
  • Have a replenish box/cupboard in your kitchen so you don’t overcrowd your cupboards.
  • Remove dry-cleaning bags before hanging in the closet to avoid trapping moisture.
  • Digitize any documents you don’t need.
  • Organise everything with boxes. Everything.

You can also find the exact containers that they use in the show here. If you want to read about them more, you can also buy their book called ‘The Home Edit: A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals’.

As we come around to spring-cleaning and getting ready for the hot, Australian summer, now is the perfect time to start editing and organising your house. With the helpful tips and advice from The Home Edit, anyone is now capable of creating clean, organized and efficient spaces.
